Psychogeography, an Improvisational Derive

Psychogeography captures a rare cross‑continental meeting in São Paulo’s experimental improvisation scene. Recorded live at Red Bull Studios during Improfest 4/2017, it brings together Brazilian innovators Antonio “Panda” Gianfratti, Marco Scarassatti, and Paulo Hartmann with Japanese legend Otomo Yoshihide.

Their unconventional tools — textural percussion, viola‑de‑cocho and self‑built instruments, prepared and extended guitars, and Yoshihide’s guitar, bass, and turntables — create a vivid, ever‑shifting sonic terrain. Across six tracks, the quartet drifts through a dérive of scraped strings, sculptural percussion, and environmental turntable noise, driven by discovery rather than structure.

Marked by acute listening and fearless interaction, Psychogeography documents São Paulo’s improvisational singularity and a collaboration that feels organic, necessary, and fully alive — music built at the edges, where tradition, invention, and risk converge.
