Quartet

A quartet led by young New York bassist Max Johnson, joined by reedist Mark Whitecage, trombonist Steve Swell, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey — three figures whose long experience in the city’s creative‑music circles gives the ensemble a deep, flexible center of gravity. Released by Not Two in 2012, the album captures Johnson at a moment when his work as a composer‑bandleader was beginning to take shape, placing his emerging voice in direct dialogue with musicians who helped define earlier eras of the downtown scene.
