Blue Chicago Blues

by Joe McPhee, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten
About This Release

A duo recording by American multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee on tenor saxophone and Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, of the trio The Thing. Recorded in Chicago in 2007 and dedicated to the memory of Chicago tenor legend Fred Anderson, Blue Chicago Blues offers a deconstructed, emotionally raw view of the blues — abstract yet palpably committed to the tradition, with McPhee's deeply vocal saxophone ranging from tenderness to rage over Håker Flaten's resonant, singing bass. One of the intimate duo settings McPhee has favoured since the 1970s.
