KIO at Cricoteka

by Kraków Improvisers Orchestra
About This Release

KIO at Cricoteka documents the Kraków Improvisers Orchestra in a vivid, three‑part performance of dyrygowana improwizacja — conducted improvisation — recorded live at Cricoteka in 2018. Founded and led by saxophonist and conductor Paulina Owczarek, KIO brings together musicians from classical, jazz, and experimental scenes to create large‑ensemble music shaped in real time through a shared system of gestures and nonverbal cues. Drawing on the lineage of Butch Morris’ conduction and inspired by ensembles such as the London Improvisers Orchestra and John Zorn’s Cobra, the orchestra transforms spontaneous ideas into collective form. The result is a dynamic, textural sound world where shifting densities, timbres, and energies emerge from moment‑to‑moment decisions between conductor and ensemble. This recording captures KIO at full strength — a 13‑member lineup of winds, strings, percussion, voice, and electronics — navigating three expansive structures that move from quiet detail to powerful massed sonorities. It is a portrait of one of Poland’s most distinctive experimental ensembles in a space that amplifies their sense of exploration and risk.
