Solar Wind

by Robert Dick, Joëlle Léandre, Miya Masaoka
About This Release

Solar Wind brings together Robert Dick, Joëlle Léandre, and Miya Masaoka in a trio encounter that feels less like a studio session and more like a convergence of natural forces. Recorded in New York in 2018, the album captures three fully formed musical languages colliding and merging into a single, living organism — Dick’s microtonal flutes and voice, Léandre’s deep, vocal contrabass, and Masaoka’s koto, electronics, and percussion, which bridge Japanese tradition and experimental practice. Their microscopic listening and fluid interplay allow a breath, an overtone, or a koto resonance to redirect the entire ensemble, creating music that moves with the unpredictability of weather: eruptions, eddies, spirals, and suspended stillness. Drawing on avant‑garde jazz, contemporary classical language, electroacoustic textures, and Japanese traditional music, Solar Wind remains one of Not Two’s most inventive late‑catalog trio statements — intense, subtle, volatile, and deeply alive.

Critical Reception
No matter how far one musician pushes, the others meet them there, ensuring the trio always moves as a single, untethered body.
