North Sea Night

North Sea Night is a duo recording by British saxophonist Simon Rose (baritone saxophone) and drummer Steve Noble, captured live on 4 February 2018 at Jazz North East, Bridge Hotel, Newcastle‑upon‑Tyne.

Rose and Noble share a long collaborative history, including extensive work in their trio with bassist Simon H. Fell. Noble, a London‑based improviser, has performed with figures such as Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, and Joe McPhee, and leads the groups N.E.W and DECOY. Rose has been active in numerous improvising contexts, with the baritone saxophone as his primary voice.

The opening half‑hour piece unfolds expansively, alternating between thunderous passages and more delicate exchanges, with extended solo sections for each musician. The remaining two shorter tracks continue the duo’s exploration of immediacy and unpredictability, emphasizing the directness of free improvisation.
