About This Release
An album by tenor saxophonist Stephen Gauci, a fixture of the Brooklyn free‑jazz community and a tireless organizer of its scene. Released by Not Two in 2012, THUNK! is built entirely on compositions by Thelonious Monk, presented in new arrangements crafted by Gauci and the other members of the band. Monk’s themes, intervals, and structural asymmetries become launching pads for open, high‑energy improvisation; rather than treating the material as repertory, the group pushes it into a raw, contemporary language that shows how Monk’s writing continues to spark invention inside a free‑improvising context.
