This CD is dedicated to the memory of Peter Kowald 21.04.1944-21.09.2002
A quartet recording bringing together alto saxophonist Marco Eneidi, the towering German free-jazz bassist Peter Kowald, bassist Damon Smith and drummer Spirit. Captured not long before Kowald's death in 2002, Ghetto Calypso documents a rare meeting of two double basses within a fiery free-jazz quartet, with material drawn partly from the Cecil Taylor and broader American avant-garde lineage in which these players moved. It stands as a valuable late document of Kowald, one of European improvised music's foundational figures.
