Lullaby For Rosemary

A 2000 Not Two reissue of the Simple Acoustic Trio’s 1995 debut on GOWI, originally released as Komeda and devoted entirely to the music of Krzysztof Komeda. This edition adds a previously unreleased live bonus track recorded for Polish Radio. Pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Sławomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michał Miśkiewicz were still teenagers when they entered the studio, yet their playing already shows an instinctive grasp of Komeda’s singular musical language — the lyricism shaped by European modernism, the spacious phrasing, the deliberate harmonic ambiguity, the emotional restraint that leaves room for tension and silence.

Rather than inflating Komeda’s melodies with sentimentality — a common pitfall among interpreters — the young trio approaches his work with clarity and respect for its architecture. They understand the balance of fragility and force that defines pieces like “Astigmatic,” and they let Komeda’s characteristic openness breathe, revealing the structural intelligence beneath the surface lyricism.

Heard in retrospect, knowing the trio would soon become Tomasz Stańko’s rhythm section and later the ECM‑signed Marcin Wasilewski Trio, the album stands as a remarkable document: three major musicians at the very beginning of their journey, already demonstrating the sensitivity, discipline, and collective intuition that would become their hallmark. It is both a tribute to Poland’s most revered jazz composer and an early statement of identity from a group destined to carry Komeda’s legacy into a new era.
