Night Asylum

Released in 2010, Night Asylum captures the Rosa Luxembourg New Quintet in a vivid document of contemporary improvised music—one of Not Two’s most distinctive international ensemble projects from that era. The group’s five musicians share a commitment to boundary‑free creation, shaping a music that moves easily between abstraction, groove, color, and raw expressive force.

Heddy Brubaker’s reeds trace a line between the structural imagination of Anthony Braxton and the earthier, human‑voiced phrasing of Marion Brown or Julius Hemphill. Piero Pepin’s trumpet brings a volatile, vocalized energy, growling and bending through the ensemble with a Lester Bowie‑like sense of drama. Marc Perrenoud anchors and destabilizes in equal measure, using bass and electric guitar not as harmonic guides but as rhythmic and textural engines. Fabien Duscombs expands the music’s space with a wide palette of percussion, shaping momentum and atmosphere with equal precision. At the center, Françoise Guerlin’s voice functions as a fully improvising instrument—elastic, unpredictable, and deeply attuned to the group’s collective motion.
