A duo recording by pianist Matthew Shipp and reedist Sabir Mateen, recorded in New York in 2009. As Shipp's first collaboration with Mateen — who concentrates here on clarinet — Sama unfolds as an eight-part suite of fully improvised music; the chamber instrumentation draws out Shipp's brooding, romantic side, reining in his characteristic hammered repetitions. An absorbing meeting of two strong downtown voices.
