Two Truths

The duo is improvised music's purest social contract. With only two musicians in the room every gesture is magnified — every choice, every risk, every act of listening. TWO TRUTHS draws thirteen duets from across the Not Two catalog, spanning nearly twenty years and showing how differently artists inhabit the form: as dialogue, confrontation, meditation, shared exploration. Brötzmann and Fischer open with sculptural tenor-and-drums; Léandre and Newton dissolve the boundary between bass and voice; Braxton and Dahlgren submit to chance, drawing playing cards to decide the form. At the heart sit four consecutive piano duets — Fernández, Shipp, Fujii, Manndorff — before two drummers, Niggli and Zumthor, close with an unexpectedly calm "Gold." Thirteen duets in which two things happen at once and turn out to be a single thing.
